Cinco de Mayo is, well, on the 5th of May! It was originally a celebration of the Mexican victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla during the Second Franco-Mexican War. While the war would go on for years, it was an important early victory to keep Mexico in the fight and forced the French to expend far more resources. More importantly, it became an important day to people with Mexican heritage living in the Untied States as a celebration of cultural pride. Starting in California, Cinco de Mayo celebrations have spread across United States.
